After seeing a child hanged, Wiesel had an exchange with another prisoner. "'Where is God now?' And I heard a voice within me answer him: 'Where is He? Here He is- He is hanging here on this gallows...'"(Wiesel, 62)

“terribly alone in a world without God and without man.” (pg 65.)

“I did not deny God’s existence, but I doubted His absolute justice.”(Wiesel, 42)
Wiesel may believe that a God exists but that does not mean he has faith. He explicitly states that he does not believe in God’s justice which is a fundamental aspect of faith. He could know all the Gods in the world exist, but without believing in their ability, he does not have faith.

That might be true, but over the story it is noted that Elie puts less attention on his religion and starts to criticize it more as time progresses.

Directions: On a piece of binder paper, write thoughtful answers to the following questions. Be sure to use evidence from the text.
  1. As Night begins, Elie’s religion is so important to him that he weeps when he prays. He is also searching for a deeper understanding of the mystical teachings of the cabbala. How does Eliezer's relationship with his faith/religion change as the book progresses?
  2. What literal and symbolic meanings does "night" have in the book?
  3. Early in the book, after Moshe the Beadle escapes his execution, no one, not even Eliezer, believes his tales (p. 7). Even when the Germans arrive in Sighet and move all the Jews into ghettos, the Jewish townspeople seem to ignore or suppress their fears. "Most people thought that we would remain in the ghetto until the end of the war, until the arrival of the Red Army. Afterward everything would be as before" (p. 12). What might be the reasons for the townspeople's widespread denial of the evidence facing them?
